Tuft & Needle Mattress Review 2023 : Is It Worth It?
In This Article
Tuft and Needle call themselves the “Internet’s Most Loved Mattress,” and they’re ranked #1 mattress on Amazon. But are their mattresses any good to actually sleep on?
Tuft and Needle were founded in Phoenix, Arizona in 2012 by JT Marino and Daehee Park. The genesis for the company occurred after JT and his wife had a particularly miserable experience shopping for mattresses as newlyweds. In response, Tuft and Needle aim to provide quality mattresses at a low price point, brought to you by a company that values transparency.
Their website makes a point of mentioning that they are a “bootstrapped company” meaning they don’t have any outside investors. As a result, they emphasize the fact that they can operate on their own timeline, focusing on the quality of their product without having investors to appease. Tuft and Needle are well-known in the industry for being responsive to customer feedback as well as constantly trying to update and improve their product.
Tuft and Needle’s business model is that they ship directly from the factory to your door, cutting out the costs of the middleman. Although they started as a strictly online supplier, in recent years they’ve added several brick-and-mortar stores in the Western United States as well as being available at certain Lowe’s locations.
All of Tuft and Needle’s mattresses are constructed from a proprietary foam that ends up feeling more like latex than memory foam. Compared to other online mattresses, we’ve found it to be quite firm. The company is also proud to say that they’re the #1 rated mattress on Amazon.com.
Their proprietary foam, which is meant to be firmer than memory foam so that the sleeper doesn’t sink into it, also features wicking graphite and cooling gel, so sleepers won’t “sleep hot.” Tuft and Needle are also proud to say that their mattresses are of the highest quality materials and made in the USA.
Although they are not made from traditional memory foam, this is still a foam mattress, so if you know you prefer springs, this may not be the mattress for you.
At the moment, Tuft and Needle offer only two styles of mattress in a variety of sizes. These are their original design and their more recent addition, the premium MINT mattress, which we review below.

Sleep Trials, Warranties & Return Policy
Like many online mattress suppliers, because you’re unable to test out the mattress yourself or even see it in person, Tuft and Needle offer you the chance to return the mattress within 100 days if you end up not liking it.
As an ethical company, many conscientious buyers will be happy to know that if their mattress should be returned during the trial period, Tuft and Needle tries their hardest to find a non-profit to donate it to, most of whom will pick up the mattress right from your home. If there isn’t a compatible non-profit in your area, according to the company, they’ll find you a “backup option.”
The company also offers a legitimate 10-year warranty for customers who decide that their mattress has shown defects due to the quality of materials or workmanship. If you should decide to take advantage of the warranty, they ask that you send them photos of the problem, and they will be happy to send you a replacement mattress free of charge.
Compare this to other companies, which offer 20-year warranties, the difference being that most of these are prorated based on how long you’ve owned the mattress.
Reviewed: Mint Mattress
In addition to their standard models, Tuft and Needle have also recently debuted their premium mattress, known as the MINT. This is at a significantly higher price point than their original design (starting at $650 for the Twin up to $1050 for the California King).
According to the company’s website, they’ve added 30% more graphite, which is meant to create 50% more cooling while you sleep. Also, the MINT features what they call “progressive support,” meaning “the more you push, the more it pushes back to meet you.” In addition, they have added a new thick, knit cover to add to the durability and coziness of the MINT.
As comfortable and attractive as the original, with the MINT, Tuft and Needle have improved one of their main Achilles’ heel’s, which was their level of edge support. Their new mattress has a more stable base layer, which props up the edges in a way that their original was lacking.
In addition, they’ve evened out the support in general, making sure that it’s just as soft and comfortable as before, but also a bit more ideal for side sleepers.
In short, this mattress gets a great review (Grade: A) as it is still less expensive than other popular online mattresses (Casper and Leesa) while featuring noticeable improvements over their original.

- Full: 75″L X 54″W X 10″H

What’s It Made Out Of?
Unlike most mattresses, Tuft and Needle’s design is relatively simple, with only two layers of foam, compared to anywhere from three to five in other mattresses. Nowadays, all of their mattresses are 10 inches thick (they have discontinued their 5-inch thick model).
Cover – The cover is made from a blend of rayon and polyester and is stretchable and quite soft to the touch. The relatively thin and simple cover layer is designed to increase breathability by wicking heat away from the body and dispersing it through the rest of the mattress.
Comfort Layer – The comfort layer of the mattress is made of 3 inches of Tuft & Needle’s proprietary Adaptive Foam, which is a poly foam with a density of 2.9 lbs.
This layer of the mattress is designed to provide relief of pressure and is what is responsible for generating the overall feel of your Tuft & Needle mattress. The foam in this layer responds pretty quickly to pressure, providing good bounce to the mattress, and ensuring you’ll never feel stuck or sink down into it, which is a common complaint with memory foam.
Base – Immediately below the comfort layer is the base layer, which consists of 7 inches of poly foam, with a density of 1.8 lbs. This base layer provides the foundational support of the mattress, lending it durability and shape.
An important selling point with Tuft and Needle’s mattresses is they are environmentally-friendly, as well as free of noxious chemicals. Their foam has been tested to emit fewer than 0.5 parts per million VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and the main off-gassing that occurs is carbon dioxide.
They are also proud to be GreenGuard Gold and OEKO-TEX certified, both of which signify that their products meet stringent requirements for off-gassing and don’t have harmful effects on your indoor air quality.
Is It Good For…?
We’ve gone into detail for each type of sleeper to determine who this mattress is best for and whose needs it may not satisfy.
Sleeping on your side tends to place the weight of your body on your hips and shoulders, so a traditional innerspring mattress can create more pressure points which will need to be later addressed.
As a result, side sleepers generally need a softer mattress which will curve to the shape of the body and relieve these pressure points. The mattress is definitely on the firmer side, so it might not be ideal for side sleepers who need a little more give.
Although stomach sleeping is often considered the most ergonomically stressful position to sleep in, it does happen. And when it does, stomach sleeping requires a medium to medium-firm mattress. It is also recommended that stomach sleepers use a mattress with at least a 1-inch soft comfort layer on top of their mattress.
Tuft and Needle’s propriety foam is firm enough to keep you properly aligned, while their three inches of comfort foam will still keep you comfortable.
There are several important factors to take into account when buyers with considerable amounts of back pain are looking into buying a mattress. The more evenly your weight is distributed as you sleep, the straighter and more supported your spine will be, which can alleviate strain on it, and relieve back problems.
Gaps that form between your body and the top layer of your mattress can exacerbate back pain.
Tuft and Needle’s mattresses are well-known in the industry for being a quality mattress for those suffering from back pain. Firm enough to support your spine, yet comfortable enough to give you a good night’s rest.
The most common issues the hot sleepers come across is that with foam mattresses (as opposed to spring mattresses), the foam has a tendency to trap heat, giving sleepers a “hugging” sensation, which can lead to overheating.
In addition to Tuft and Needle’s heat wicking graphite and cooling gel in their “adaptive foam,” their cover has been designed to be extremely breathable to help keep you cool at night.
Heavier people have several factors to take into account when looking to purchase a mattress. These include the thickness of the mattress, the quality of the foam, the mattress’ ability to disperse heat (as many heavier people are also hot sleepers), and the weight of the mattress itself.
In addition to the coolness of a Tuft and Needle being a plus for heavier people and the foam being high-quality, the overall support of the base layer makes this a good, if not ideal option for heavier customers.
Their main goal has been to strike the perfect balance between a firm and a soft mattress, and the comfort comes in the top layer, with the base foam as supportive as other foam mattresses, though not as supportive as a traditional spring mattress.
The main factors which contribute to a mattress being ideal for sex are its level of support (so that it can withstand vigorous activity), bounciness (which makes it responsive during this activity), and noise control (which makes sure this activity doesn’t keep your neighbors or roommates up all night).
Tuft and Needle’s mattresses have the three of these in spades. Their poly foam construction gives it a nice bounce, while the high-density base support foam gives you plenty of support. Like most foam mattresses, there is little to no noise created from the bouncing, which means that you can enjoy your intimate activities without worry.
Where Can I Buy It?
For their first four years, in order to keep costs low, Tuft and Needle mattresses were strictly available online. From the company’s start, they shipped directly from their factory to your home, and of course, their mattresses are still available to purchase either directly from their website or (like most other things) from Amazon.com.
In the past few years, they have added three brick-and-mortar shops, two in Arizona and one in Seattle. If you live in these areas and like to be able to see and feel a mattress before you buy it, you should go ahead and stop in. Their prices are the same as the online store.
In addition, certain Lowe’s hardware stores across the United States also carry Tuft and Needle.
How Much Does It Cost?
For the quality of material, they use and consistently high ratings they receive, it’s hard to find a better value than Tuft and Needle. Their prices range from a twin for $325 to a king for $700 when you buy directly from the Tuft and Needle website. This is thousands less than you might pay for a mattress at a traditional, pre-internet mattress store.
Is It Worth It?
In a word, yes. Tuft and Needle seem to be the real deal when it comes to an earnest company trying to make a quality product. Their transparency doesn’t seem to be a gimmick but based on a real desire to make their customers happy and to grow at a rate that is steady without being greedy.
With their 10-year warranty in place and their 100-day sleep trial, it is not a risky proposition to buy a Tuft and Needle mattress. If you’re looking for a quality mattress from an ethical company, and don’t have all the money in the world to spend, Tuft and Needle is an ideal option.
Compare Similar Brands
For quality mattresses at a similar price point ($500-$1000), Tuft and Needle have three main competitors that you may have heard of.
Leesa Sleep makes their mattresses from a similar material, but their price point is about $100 higher than T & N’s. Their twin mattress starts at $525, and they have a similar 100-night trial and ten-year warranty.
Casper Mattress has gone hard with their marketing campaigns in recent years, so many average consumers tend to think of them as the original mattress-in-a-box.
Casper has similar high ratings online, as well as a 100-night trial and ten-year warranty, but their price point is a few hundred dollars higher than Tuft and Needle’s, with a twin mattress starting at $595 and their California King retailing for $1195.
Nectar Mattresses are the closest to Tuft and Needle in price, with their twin starting at $375 and their California King at only $775.
They also love to advertise the fact that they are “risk-free in every way,” which, in practical terms, means that they give a 365-day trial period (compared to most other companies 100 days) and offer a “Forever Warranty.” They mean what they say here, which is that if at any point after purchase, your mattress proves defective, they will replace your mattress at no charge.
Once your order is placed, expect to receive your package within 2-5 business days from FedEx Ground. They deliver Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Deliveries to Hawaii and Alaska will take up to 10 days and have an added charge of between $120 and $190.
Like many online retailers’ products, these mattresses come compressed and vacuum-sealed and will expand upon opening. They are delivered straight to your door in a 19x19x44 box which unpacks easily in just minutes. The company recommends up to 72 hours for the mattress to fully expand and for any odor to dissipate.
If you don’t plan on being home, FedEx will usually leave your package outside the door unless you specifically request for them not to. Shipping weights will range from around 50 lbs. (for a Twin) to 94 lbs. (for the Cal King).
Best Bed Frame/Foundation for the Tuft and Needle Mattress
These mattresses are designed to be compatible with your existing bed frame, whether it’s a box spring, a slatted frame, or an adjustable frame. They can even be used directly on the floor, although like any mattress, this puts them at risk of mildew unless they are aired out regularly.
Tuft and Needle has a selection of frames available on their website, which were designed specifically for their mattresses, including a beautiful hardwood frame with a headboard and small footprint.
Although these are quite handsome will go with your mattress perfectly, your current bedframe will work just as well.
Why Not To Buy a Tuft & Needle Mattress
If you’re someone who is attached to an innerspring mattress, then these are obviously not for you. Otherwise, the only significant complaints we’ve come across is the less-than-ideal edge support, and within 5-6 years of purchase, some users claim that the mattress has a tendency to sag. Otherwise, we’re big fans.
Overall Grade: A
A hard brand to beat at this price point, Tuft and Needle might not be the most comfortable mattress you’ve ever slept on, but at this price point, and with their generous warranty/refund policy, you can’t go wrong.
Tuft and Needle seem to have really put thought into their product, genuinely appreciate feedback from their customers, value transparency, and are constantly trying to improve. If you’re willing to take a chance on an online “mattress-in-a-box” company, this is an ideal choice, without a lot of risks.
