Real Sleep is a new ‘bed in a box’ mattress brand that was launched by Real Simple Magazine, a woman’s magazine that highlights articles on wellbeing, cooking, childcare, and home keeping. The Meredith Corporation owns Real Sleep and Real Simple, which you might recognize from their other media efforts, Better Homes and Gardens, Every day with Rachael Ray, and Family Circle.
Real Simple frequently covers the topic of sleep, almost on a monthly basis. Kristen Payne, VP of licensing and accolades at Meredith Corp. explained that after listening to their Real Simple readers’ complaints about their sleep issues, “we searched for a solution that would make the mattress shopping experience easy and provide a distinctly better night’s rest.”
Being a family-centric media corporation, Real Sleep wanted to be sure that they were providing an ultra-clean bed that is toxin-free and made out of premium materials. And with the environment in mind, the processes used to manufacture this mattress are very clean as well.
Real Sleep Products
REAL SLEEP® by Real Simple only offers the one product line at this point. It is an open cell, Flora Flex memory foam mattress with a 100 percent organic cotton cover is naturally resistant to dust and mites. The Real Sleep mattress is CERTIPUR-US certified and is made with 100 percent clean manufacturing processes.
Real Sleep’s exclusive Flora Flex foam is supposedly fantastic for pressure relief. And it’s open cell nature allows for excellent temperature regulation. This bed has an industry leading weight support rating. The memory foam system was designed to support up to 750 pounds!
Real Sleep Customer Support
The brand is quite new, but so far it looks like Real Simple and Real Sleep are devoting a lot of energy to keeping their customers happy.
They have an easy to see customer service 800 number right at the top of their web page as well as a live chat box so that you can speak to a representative via instant messaging right on the website.
The one thing that I noticed that was a little bit of a put off is their featured ‘Real Customer Reviews’ seem fake. The review responses still have the ‘store owner’ icon, and each review is met with a very generic response.
Now I am not saying that Real Sleep purchased these reviews. There is no proof of this. But it seems like it, at least that is the feeling I get. Once you get past the first few, the reviews do look much more legitimate.
Besides this feeling I get from the first part of the review section, Real Sleep seems to be very customer focused. I used the chat box, and real human responded after a short while to answer my questions. This surprised me because normally, these chat boxes trick you into getting on a company’s mailing list.
They use something along the lines of, ‘all representatives are currently busy, please leave your message, and we will get back to you with an email.’
Unabashed trickery was not the case with Real Sleep. The information that I provide later in the article about locations was provided by the customer service representative. This person is also where I got the specifics on the warranty and shipping information.
So, kudos to Real Sleep’s customer service department. Great job team! Maybe those reviews are real after all?
Sleep Trials, Warranties & Return Policy
Of course, it’s entirely possible you’ll find that this isn’t a good fit for you. So, let’s find out what your options are if that’s the case.
With regards to the sleep trial, there isn’t much that stands out when compared to other mattress companies. Real Sleep offers a 100-night trial which is pretty much standard across the board.
Their return policy looks quite good. It is better than quite a few of the other brands because they do not charge for a returned mattress and give you a full refund if you are not 100% satisfied. All you have to do is call their 800 number or email their support department, and they will send someone to remove the mattress from your home.
Most brands, even the ones that offer a full refund on your purchase, will deduct around a hundred dollars to cover the cost of pickup. Other brands like Tempur-Pedic and Sealy, won’t give you a refund at all. They only give you a different mattress to try, and they charge upwards of 200 hundred dollars for this ‘benefit.’
Real Sleep mattresses come with a 10-year warranty that includes:
- Repair or replacement if the mattress is deemed defective.
- Coverage for any long-lasting indentation of ¾ inches or greater that is not the sagging foundation due to mattress support.
The Warranty does not cover:
- Physical damage such as burns, cuts, tears, stains, or soiled materials.
- Normal increase or decrease in the mattress and of the recovery feature of the REAL SLEEP™ mattress memory foam materials, neither of which affect the bed’s pressure relieving ability (They do not, however, state what ‘normal’ is).
Real Sleep offers free delivery within the contiguous United States. There is a flat $200.00 shipping fee for those in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or off-shore US military bases.
Real Sleep Coupons, Discounts, Sales & Deals
When I googled ‘coupons for real sleep mattress’ I got quite a few results. That said, the results were disappointing. Shopping web pages came up with coupons and discounts for the Real Sleep bed in a box, but they we the same prices that you find on the Real Sleep website. So, right off the bat, I was unsuccessful in finding any real discounts for Real Sleep.
However, the company does offer a form of financing called Klarna. It allows you to spread your payments out at an APR of 9.99% over 18 months. So, a queen mattress that would have cost you $1295.00 paid in full can be purchased at the reasonable rate of $79 per month. The estimated total of payments comes to $1422.00 which isn’t bad at all given the fact that you are getting 18 months of leeway.

What Sizes Are Available?
Real Sleep by Real Simple is available in six different sizes:
- Twin (39” x 74” is 10-inches thick and weighs 50 pounds)
- Twin XL (39” x 80” is 10-inches thick and weighs 55 pounds)
- Full (54” x 74” is 10-inches thick and weighs 65 pounds)
- Queen (60” x 80” is 10-inches thick and weighs 79 pounds)
- King (76” x 80” is 10-inches thick and weighs 102 pounds)
- Cal. King (72” x 84” is 10-inches thick and weighs 102 pounds)
What’s It Made Out Of?
The Real Sleep mattress is made of Real Simple’s proprietary FloraFlex memory foam. It is 10-inches thick and rated a 7 out of 10 when it comes to firmness, putting it just past medium towards medium-firm. FloraFlex is made in the USA using non-toxic manufacturing processes to help keep the environment green and to eliminate off-gassing so that you and your family stay healthy.
As the name FloraFlex suggests, the foam is made of plant-based materials and uses no harmful chemicals.
- No formaldehyde or phthalates
- No toxic flame retardants–natural flame retardants only
- No ozone depleters
- Virtually No VOC (volatile organic compounds)
- Not cruel to animals
FloraFlex is an open-cell foam. It is constructed to conform to your corporal curves while offering full support down the length of the body. This specially designed foam targets special needs areas such as your neck, hips, back, and knees.
Open-cell structured foams allow the mattress to breathe better so that heat is easily conducted away from your body to keep you cool. The added airflow also helps the mattress stay drier, thus cleaner.
The cover is 100% organic cotton. It is soft with large pores to promote even more breathability into the mattress. Unlike some bed-in-a-box covers, this one has a zipper for easy removal and cleaning. Unlike some covers that only allow for spot cleaning or dry cleaning, the Real Sleep cover is washable.
When you remove the cover, you can see that there are at least two layers of foam. The top layer is greenish blue and about two and a half inches thick. This should be the FloraFlex layer. There isn’t much information available on the actual makeup of the materials used or the inner construction.
I guess they are holding their cards close to their chest, for the time being, kind of like Tempur-Pedic does regarding their proprietary materials. But from the looks of it, it is a gel foam infused blend, which would make sense given its fantastic cooling properties.
The other visible layer is the white foam base that is around seven or eight inches tall. Typically, Higher density foams are commonly used in support layers for foam beds. They give the bed its structural integrity and shape. This is the part that, holds your weight and determines how durable your mattress is.
I am not sure exactly what the rating is, but it feels a little denser than the standard 2-lb foam that many other brands use. Depending on the quality and also how firm the bed is intended to be, brands tend to use between 2-lb and 7-lb foam in their base layer. Real Sleep feels somewhere in-between.
Is It Good For …?
Yes. The FloraFlex foam bed was designed to provide targeted support to the hips and shoulder areas. Specialized support will allow the points of your hips and shoulders to appropriately sink into the mattress for pressure relief while the gaps along your side are filled in for full-body support.
Yes. Stomach sleepers need two things: a cool sleeping surface, and the right amount of support so their hips are not pushed up which arches the back and creates pressure on the chest by pushing it into the mattress. The Real Sleep bed does both of these things well.
Yes. Memory foam beds in general have been known to a great option to help relieve back pains. The full body support provided by this exclusive FloraFlex foam should keep your spine in alignment and promote a healthier back.
Yes. The FloraFlex open-cell foam is quite breathable and does a great job at dissipating body heat. The light, organic cotton cover coupled with the FloraFlex foam makes the Real Sleep bed sleep nice and cool.
Yes. REAL SLEEP™ claims that they designed this bed to fully support 750 pounds. But they do say that for customers over 300 pounds will have the best sleep experience on the Kin or California King.
Neutral. Traditionally, ‘sexy beds’ assist in body movement. Think a bouncy spring mattress or water bed. The Real Sleep mattress will no hinder movement, but it wasn’t designed with sex in mind; it was designed for sleep comfort.

- The Twin is $785

Is It Worth It?
This company is brand new, so they haven’t proven themselves yet. But they do have a lot at stake with this being a sub-division of some major media outlets. So far, I really do like what I see, more so than many of the other foam beds in the same price range. I believe the bed is worth it.
The Real Sleep mattress ships in just three days after ordering so, it usually arrives at your doorstep within a week total. It comes rolled and compressed in a slick, blue box with purple trim. Shipping is free inside of the continental United States, but there is a flat shipping fee for Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico.
Best Bed Frame/Foundation for the Real Sleep Mattress
Real Sleep states clearly that their mattress is designed to be used on a flat surface or flat foundation. It can be used on the floor, on a box spring, a bed frame that doesn’t have wide gaps or any adjustable base.
If you are going to place the Real Sleep mattress in your existing non-adjustable bed frame, I would recommend that you use a sheet of wood between the frame and mattress to create a completely flat surface so that you get the best possible performance out the Real
Why Not To Buy A Real Sleep Mattress
If you are looking for traditional spring mattress feel, you will not be happy with this bed. The same goes for latex foam hybrid beds that have more bounce at the surface. The Real Sleep isn’t as soft as some of the more old-school memory foam mattresses that almost envelope your whole body and suck you into the bed, but it is still foam bed that conforms to your body shape.
If you want a bit more bounce to your bed, I would recommend, Saatva. Their price point is, in fact, they are a little bit less expensive. Plus they are very comparable with the materials they use. Both are CERTIPUR-US certified and utilized environmentally friendly manufacturing processes.
The key difference between the Saatva and Real Sleep Mattress is that Saatva is a hybrid bed that has a gel foam on the surface of the mattress, a set of individually wrapped coils underneath, and some more foam below the coils, and an innerspring base. The dual-coil system with a gel foam comfort layer provides a totally different feel as compared to an all-foam bed.
There are many different mattress brands on the market right now, but I must say that I am excited about Real Sleep. I feel that their sleep comfort level is comparable to the other high-quality all-foam brands. But Real Sleep goes the extra mile in a couple of areas.
They truly stand out with their customer service and health & environment efforts. The fact that they don’t put profits over protecting the environment is essential to me. Also, being a parent, I love that they work so hard at making their product free of harmful chemicals.
The result of this is little to no off-gassing and no heavy chemical odors when you get your bed is new. Most new foam mattresses can’t even be slept on for the first couple of days because the chemical smells make your head spin. Real Sleep is virtually odor free, other than having that fine smell of something new.
Real Sleep Gets an ‘A’ Rating: I give Real Sleep an A for their initial product, price, and efforts. I see no reason why not to give this brand a chance if you are in the market for a memory foam mattress. Especially given the fact that they have a hassle-free return policy and will give you all of your money back should you decide that the REAL SLEEP® mattress isn’t right for you.
