About These Two Brands

Purple Recap Full Review

  • Fantastic pressure relief in any position.
  • Stays super cool while sleeping.

Why Not To Like The Purple Bed

  • Not available for testing in stores.
  • Purple has a different feel than other mattresses.

Two brothers designed Purple. One is a rocket scientist and the other a comfort materials specialist. They developed a material called hyper-elastic polymer™ and then created a structure that could relax under pressure, the Smart Comfort Grid™. It is a series of hollow columns formed out of the polymer used to make Purple’s unique comfort layer.

The combination of these two technologies led to the Original Purple Bed. “the world’s first no pressure mattress.” Although it is considered a bed in a box, it would be more accurate to call it a roll-up bed. Instead of being compressed into a box, Purple comes delivered to your front door in a tight roll.

Tuft & Needle Recap Full Review

Why To Like T&N

  • Tuft & Needle is quite affordable.
  • Adaptive Foam® is soft without the sink.
  • T&N is environmentally aware.
  • They have simplified the mattress shopping experience.
  • Only two layers so much less glue is used.

Why Not To Like T&N

  • T&N’s Adaptive Foam is more bouncy than traditional foam.
  • May not support larger people as well as some other beds.

Since coming out in 2012, Tuft & Needle has made some exciting design changes. They have engineered their new Adaptive Foam® based on customer feedback. They have tried to capture the best parts of latex foam and memory foam without negative attributes.

The new foam is ‘adaptive’ in that it reacts with the correct amount of support for the amount of pressure that is put on it. T&N has simplified their bed. They believe that more layers do not mean better. Tuft & Needle decided to focus on the quality of the foam they use instead of how many layers of foam they use.

  • Tuft & Needle offers a standard 100-night trial period.
  • 100% refund and free removal if you opt out during the sleep-trial.
  • A 10-year Non-Prorated Warranty protects the Bed.

  • T&N is Made with Low Emissions and is GREENGUARD Gold Certified.
  • OEKO-TEX® Certified and Free of Hundreds of Common Toxic Chemicals.
  • Made in America.

Tuft & Needle and Purple Comparison

So, you have seen the basic overview of each brand, but how do they compare against one another? In this section, we’ll dissect a couple of fundamental similarities and differences.

How are Purple and Tuft & Needle Similar

Purple and Tuft & Needle each offer a comparable 10-year limited warranty.

Sleep Trial

Tuft & Needle and Purple give you 100 days to test their products. Both companies are nice enough to pick up their mattress free of charge, should you choose not to move forward after the trial period.

Although both companies have some shipping fees to Alaska and Hawaii, they ship free to your doorstep within the contiguous United States and Canada.

The Cover

T&N uses a polyester/tactel blend that is stretchy and thin. This makes it quite a breathable cover. Purple uses a viscose, lycra, polyester stretch knit cover that is very light-weight, soft and breathable as well. Although there are a few differences in the look and materials used in these two covers, the end result is pretty much the same. Both are soft, stretchy, and breathable.

Overall Quality

Both of these beds use high-quality materials. They are both made with non-toxic, hypoallergenic materials and there is little to no off-gassing with either of these products.

Purple is rated just a hair softer than the Tuft & Needle. But they are both in the medium range and quite similar. Lab tests and  Purple reviews set the firmness at around 6.5 to 7. This rating makes it a little softer than the T&N and very close to sitting exactly at medium firmness. The Tuft & Needle reviews rate the hardness on a scale of  7 out of 10, making the T&N just to the right of medium firmness, towards medium-firm.

How are Purple and Tuft & Needle Different

Purple® Beds are not pricy at all when it comes to other comparable mattresses. But Tuft & Needle is downright cheap (though not cheaply made). A queen-sized Purple comes in at $999.00, and a queen-sized T&N will run you just $575. That’s $474 less!

Tuft & Needle has managed to cut through the mattress industry B.S. and provide a quality product at a very affordable price. When considering the quality of materials and environmental responsibility, can this price be beaten? I don’t think so.

Tuft & Needle dumbs it down and uses just two layers of foam. The comfort layer three inches of T&N Adaptive® Foam. The proprietary foam is infused with cooling gel and heat-wicking graphite to help keep the sleeping surface cool during the night.

Below this is a thick, seven-inch layer of higher density support foam to provide the ideal base for this bed. The combination of using these two layers creates excellent pressure relief and comfort without feeling too soft or quicksand-like, which is commonplace in many memory foam beds.

The Purple Bed is made up of three layers total. The first is the Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ Smart Comfort Grid™. The grid is a network of hollow squares that are designed to collapse under pressure and transfer the stress to surrounding areas on the grid.

Next is the transition layer which consists of a CertiPUR-US, plush comfort foam. This is a soft, high-density polyurethane that works in conjunction with the smart Comfort Grid™ to enhance responsiveness.

Finally, we have the support layer. The base is a medium-firm polyfoam that supports the Purple mattress, giving the bed its structural support.

How they Feel

Neither of these mattresses has that classic foam bed feel. Both have quite a bit more bounce and both are quick to respond to applied pressure.

The T&N feels more akin to latex than a memory foam bed. The Adaptive® Foam is quick to respond, giving it a springiness that is different from other foam. You should never feel sunk into the Tuft & Needle mattress.

The 7-inch-thick support layer offers excellent full-body support for people of average sizes.  When you lay in this bed, you will feel that it works great for stomach and back sleepers. But there is just a little bit of bite at the hips for side sleepers. This is perfectly acceptable for average body sizes but could be a bit of an issue with bigger, heavier people.

The breathability of the cover coupled with the heat-wicking graphite and cooling gel in the Adaptive® Foam make this one of the cooler foam mattresses on the market.

The Purple feels like no other bed on the market. The Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ Smart Comfort Grid™ gives you a floating feeling. Just like the Purple marketing team claims, the grid collapses in the spots where there is more pressure, such as the points, bumps, and curves of your body. This gives you a lovely floating feeling.

Pressure maps hardly picked up any hotspots, even throughout the hips area when the sleeper is laying on their side. The combination of their proprietary polymer and two types of foam succeeds in making a ‘no-pressure mattress.’ You feel your weight supported and all of the more accentuated points of your body nestled into to the bed perfectly.

Motion Transfer

The T&N ADAPTIVE® Foam does not disappoint when it comes to stopping energy from transferring across the bed. Purple Bed performs right where expected as per industry standards. But the Tuft & Needle is fantastic in this regard. You could climb in and out of bed without disturbing your partner even the slightest.

Environmental Awareness

If the environment and indoor health matters to you, Tuft & Needle surpasses expectations with their production standards. I have not seen another mattress in this price range that is CertiPUR-US®, GREENGUARD certified, and OEKO-TEX® certified. Not only does T&N take the environment into account, but they consider their employees’ and your health a priority.

Not everyone finds this type of thing important. But T&N holds themselves to a higher standard when it comes to emissions and the health of any humans that come in contact with their products.

And the Winner is …

We’re confident recommending Purple as the best choice based on our analysis of key factors that an average, discerning mattress shopper would care most about.

Both of these companies offer excellent products, and the Tuft & Needle makes a case for itself at just 575 dollars. However, this comparison is about which one is the better mattress. Purple outshines T&N when it comes to comfort for the masses and durability. Although the T&N might be useful for average sized stomach and back sleepers. However, side sleepers and larger individuals might not be as comfortable. The Purple® Bed is exceptionally pressure-relieving in any sleep position and for almost any body type.

For Sleepers with Specific Needs

Side Sleepers: Choose Purple® Bed

Purple’s patented technology allows for pressure relief even throughout the hips. The grid breaks down allowing your hips and shoulders to sink in while the rest of the polymer stays intact, properly supporting your body’s indentations, keeping your spine aligned and keep you sleeping comfortably.

Stomach Sleepers: Choose Purple® Bed

The pressure sensors show close to zero pressure when people were sleeping on their stomachs in the Purple Bed. You’re back, and hips stay aligned so that you don’t feel any pressure on your chest or neck.

People With Back Pain: Choose Purple® Bed

With chronic back pain, it’s all about spinal alignment. Over time, a properly aligned spine is allowed to decompress and receive more blood flow. This is known to reduce back pain. Purple is one of the best in the business at keeping your spine correctly aligned, no matter how you sleep.

Heavy People: Choose Purple® Bed

The ability of the Smart Comfort Grid™ to transfer weight and pressure is perfect for heavier individuals. Bigger people will feel much more supported while remaining comfortable as compared to other beds of similar firmness.

Couples: Choose Purple® Bed

The Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ and Smart Grid combined with the high-density foam layers below provide a good amount of edge support. If you wind up sleeping on the edge of the bed because of your partner’s selfish sleeping habits, you won’t feel like you are going to fall off the bed.

The 15 patents that go into making the Purple Bed have been put to great use. This bed is comfortable for just about anyone, and the high-density foam proprietary polymers are very durable. The Purple Bed will be pressure-relieving and comfortable for years to come.
