Purple and Tempur-Pedic Comparison

Purple and Tempur-Pedic may not seem like they have anything in common, but they do have a few similar mattress philosophies and some of the same logistics.

How are Purple and Tempur-Pedic similar?

First, here are a few ways that David and Goliath are similar despite outward appearances.

Mattress Philosophy

Some mattress companies have the idea that they’ll have one model of mattress that will suit a general audience and that’s it. It’s a model that works, but what if you want more options?

Both Purple and Tempur-Pedic have a few options for how thick, firm or soft, and what type of mattress you have. There are options so that you can choose a bed that more closely aligns with your preferences.

Mattress Construction

Both companies use the contouring and support foam system. Contouring foam molds to your body to give you less pressure on your curves and help you sleep in a more natural position. Conventional mattresses force your body into a straight line, and since that can’t happen, you’re more than familiar with how that feels in the morning.

The support layer is either a dense foam that provides pushback to keep your spine aligned and avoid too much sink, or a layer of micro-coils in the case of hybrid mattresses that accomplish the same goal.

Both companies offer these memory foam styles and hybrid styles. They give you more control over how your mattress feels.

Motion Transfer

Tempur-Pedic is the master at reducing motion transfer. If you sleep with a small army of children or pets, or if your partner likes to practice gymnastics moves while resting, you’ll be thrilled that your mattress reduces the amount of movement that reaches your side of the bed.

Purple also does well reducing motion transfer. For both of these companies, even their hybrid mattresses are supported and insulated enough that the coils support but don’t ricochet your pet’s furious middle-of-the-night scratching sessions to your sleeping body.

Financing

If the price of the mattress is too much for you to handle today (and with the Tempur-Pedic price range, we definitely understand), both companies offer financing options that you can complete on their website.

Tempur-Pedic’s financing options require a minimum purchase amount. Purple finances through a third party that can offer well-qualified customers zero percent interest for six months. If you don’t qualify for that rate, there are other interest rates you may be eligible for.

Shipping

Once you purchase your mattress, it ships free right to your door.

Manufacturing and Customer Service

Supporting industries that provide jobs in the USA might be important to you, so you’ll be glad to know that both companies manufacture mattresses in the United States. Purple is based in Utah and produces there exclusively. Tempur-Pedic is an international company, and components of the mattress may come from abroad.

They both have customer service representatives located in the US as well to smooth the process of filing a complaint or initiating a return.

Warranty

Both companies offer a ten-year warranty for mattress defects. Return fees are handled at the company’s discretion but for genuinely defective mattresses, you get a new mattress for free. For other wear and tear, both companies reserve the right to make judgment calls for what’s best.

How are Purple and Tempur-Pedic Different?

And now for the good stuff.

Mattress Styles

While Tempur-Pedic offers a range of mattress styles, Purple has two. You get a pretty wide range with that however. Let’s take a look.

Purple

A more traditional memory foam mattress and a hybrid mattress, both topped with the most science-y first layer you can imagine.

The first Purple mattress is a three-layer mostly foam mattress intended to displace pressure down to almost nothing. It succeeds. The top layer is a stretchy grid layer that conforms to the body the best of nearly any mattress we’ve seen. Underneath is a transition layer of comfort foam that provides more contouring and eases the body to the support layer. The base layer provides structural support and pushes back against the body with high-density foam to keep the spine in alignment.

It’s rated as a six and a half on a ten-point firmness scale.

The newest Purple is a hybrid mattress. You still get the zero-pressure grid layer, but instead of foam, Purple uses pocketed coils sandwiched in layers of transitional foam to improve bounce but still provide the support the spine and body needs. It’s better for those who want a softer mattress and prefer the feel of an innerspring mattress over solid foam.

It’s rated as a six and a half on a ten-point firmness scale.

Tempur-Pedic

Tempur-Pedic has a lot of options, but let’s break them down into the three model types.

The Contour mattress is Tempur-Pedic’s firm support mattress. It uses four layers of targeted foam. The first layer is a thin cooling layer designed to move heat away from the body. The next comfort layer determines the firmness of the mattress. Underneath is a support layer that pushes back against the body and distributes weight. The final layer is a base layer that provides structural support for the mattress.

It’s rated as a seven on the ten-point firmness scale.

The Cloud mattress is similar to the Contour, but the comfort layer is a much softer foam. It’s rated at about a five on the ten-point firmness scale and satisfies those who prefer a less firm but still supportive mattress.

The Flex is Tempur-Pedic’s hybrid style mattress. It uses pocketed coils in the support layer sandwiched between layers of foam to reduce motion transfer. It feels more responsive like an innerspring mattress. It’s better for those who don’t like the feel of memory foam because Tempur-Pedic foam beds have that classic “hug” of memory foam.

The Grandbed is Tempur-Pedic’s luxury bed. It’s modeled after those swanky five-star hotel suite beds and begins with a top layer of silk-cashmere (yes, really). It uses two contouring layers and two support layers of foam to create the pillowiest bed ever.

Bounce

Tempur-Pedic’s all foam options are going to give you that traditional “hug” of memory foam. For some, however, this hug feels more like “sinking.” If the nonresponsive layers of foam bug you, Tempur-Pedic might not be the right one.

This hug doesn’t apply to the Flex option because the pocketed coils are going to push back and be generally more responsive than just foam.

Purple’s surface grid layer is a lot more responsive than foam, quickly regaining its original shape after depressions and generally bouncing back as you move around. If you crave that “hug,” it might not show up for you as much in the Purple.

Heavy Sleepers

Purple is one of the few mattresses on our list that accounts for heavier sleepers. While the mattress isn’t made explicitly with heavy sleepers in mind, it does fully support a total weight of up to 600 pounds. This rating means if you and/or your partner is on the heavier side, the mattress will still disperse pressure and feel like the firmness scale estimated from the company itself.

Tempur-Pedic does not have weight recommendations, nor do the mattresses fully account for weight.

Delivery

Purple is a bed-in-a-box. The delivery person isn’t going to haul your mattress away from your house, and you’re going to be responsible for unpacking the box and getting the mattress onto your bed.

Tempur-Pedic is delivered more traditionally. It comes fully expanded but wrapped in plastic. They offer white glove service, meaning the delivery person is going to take away your old mattress, help you get the new one positioned, and make sure everything is ready to go before leaving. It costs extra, but if you don’t have someone who can help you and you need it, it might be worth it to you.

Trial Period

Purple and Tempur-Pedic understand that buying a mattress online can be nerve-wracking. Tempur-Pedic gives you three months from delivery to decide if you like your mattress. You have 90 nights to allow your body to adjust to the bed and figure out if it’s improving your sleep.

Purple adds ten more days to that total for 100 nights to try out their mattress. Both companies ask that you sleep on your new bed for a minimum of 30 nights before initiating a return.

Price

Here’s a glaring difference. Tempur-Pedic mattresses are nearly double the price of the standard Purple. A California king in the original Purple is going to cost you about $900 while the Tempur-Pedic mattresses are going to set you back over $3000 for the same size.

The New Purple closes that gap with a California king also costing over $3000. Price wouldn’t be so much of a factor if the original Purple weren’t such an outlier.

Showrooms

Another significant difference between Purple and Tempur-Pedic is how easy it is to test out the Tempur-Pedic mattress before you buy. It’s stocked in retailers and mattress showrooms across the United States and Canada as well as locations worldwide.

Even if you live in an out of the way place, chances are you’ll be able to find a Tempur-Pedic model somewhere within a reasonable distance from you. Seeing the mattress in person can help you narrow down a mattress before taking advantage of the online sleep trial (provided you purchase online).

Purple, on the other hand, has only two showrooms located in Utah. If you live in Utah, good for you, but for everyone else, you’ll have to rely on the sleep trial to decide if you like the mattress.

And The Winner Is…

We’re confident recommending Purple as the best choice based on our analysis of key factors that an average, discerning mattress shopper would care most about.

Oh, Tempur-Pedic. You’re just such an expensive mattress.

Purple can be expensive, too, but the budget option combined with the rating for heavier sleepers means Purple edges out Tempur-Pedic in this competition. While we like that we can choose different firmness levels, Purple is just a better choice for most sleepers.

For sleepers with specific needs…

Side Sleepers: Choose Purple

Here’s why. Purple’s grid layer reduces pressure better than just about any bed we’ve seen. The pressure points for side sleepers are a serious concern, and we think Purple has done an excellent job of reducing those pressure points for a better sleep.

Stomach Sleepers: Choose Purple

Here’s why. For a lot of the same reasons as side sleepers, the grid reduces pressure and distributes weight over the mattress better than other beds.

Back Pain: Choose Purple

Here’s why. The pressure relieving grid allows your spine to decompress and remain in alignment. It reduces that pressure point and prevents you from tossing and turning.

Heavy People: Choose Purple

Here’s why. Purple is rated up to 600 pounds before the support begins to give way. While not the industry leader (try Winkbeds Plus instead), it’s better rated than Tempur-Pedic

Couples: Choose Purple

Here’s why. Purple is bouncier overall than Tempur-Pedic, and the new Purple even uses coils to make sure that things are as responsive as possible. It feels better for activities, but when it’s sleep time, everyone gets their own flat, still surface to sleep on.

Conclusion

Purple comes closer to Tempur-Pedic in price, but we still feel that for the value, Purple is going to be a better choice. We’re fascinated by Purple’s grid layer and the way it reduces pressure on our curves and joints better than a lot of other mattresses out there. It’s particularly useful for side sleepers, and even if you’re looking at the more expensive version, there are financing options available, putting it within reach today.
