Why Not To Like The Purple Bed

Purple is known for their patented comfort technology. The original Purple mattress uses their hyper-elastic polymer™ to create a comfort layer (top layer) that is made out of hundreds of hollow columns. This sits on top of a 3.5-inch transitional foam layer and 4-inch base layer.
Even though Purple isn’t all foam, they manage to tightly roll mattress in a compressed wrap/bag so that it can be mail delivered to your doorstep, similar to other bed-in-a-box brands. Purple claims that by cutting out the middlemen and gimmicks and remaining online only, they can offer their product at a much more affordable price than you would typically see.

Loom & Leaf and Purple Comparison
We have a little history and knowledge on each of these brands, but how do they compare? Their prices are relatively similar but is one truly better than the other? Let’s look at the attributes.
How are Loom & Leaf and Purple Similar
Price shouldn’t be a huge factor here. L&L is slightly more expensive, but not enough to be a determining factor in your decision-making process.
Purple® Beds come to directly to your home in a tightly rolled bundle. L&L also comes to your doorstep, but via delivery men.
Loom & Leaf and Purple are two of the best mattresses in this price bracket for back support and full-body support. Both offer superior pressure relief and spinal alignment.
Both of these sleep products are made from high-quality and durable materials. I would go out on a limb and say that these could be the two most durable mattresses in the thousand-dollar range.
Laboratory tests using motion sensors have shown that each of these beds performs within the industry standard for memory-foam-type beds. Although they are not the best at stopping the transfer of motion, they each work well enough that you shouldn’t disturb your partner.
Loom & Leaf Reviews generally rate the mattress at 7 out of 10, and Purple® Bed reviews come in at 6.5 out of 10. Although Purple rates the Relaxed Firm between 6 and 7. The unique nature of the hyper-elastic polymer used by Purple makes it feel a bit firmer than it is, so these mattresses compare very well.
Lab tests using pressure mapping pads have shown that both of these beds are in the upper end of the spectrum when it comes to mattresses that relieve pressure for all sleep styles. People say that L&L shines for side sleepers, and it does. But it shines for stomach sleepers. The Purple Bed’s Smart Comfort Grid does relieve pressure on the shoulders and hips making it a side sleeper’s dream come true.
How Loom & Leaf and Purple are Different
A comfort specialist and a rocket scientist (literally) designed the Purple bed. The hyper-elastic polymer™ and Smart Comfort Grid™ of hollow squares are just two of the 15 patents used when making this high-tech bed.
The way the Smart Comfort Grid ™ works is that each square will temporarily collapse giving enough weight and pressure, thus transferring the stress to surrounding columns. The other benefit of having hollow columns in the comfort layer is that it allows for a lot more air flow that most any other mattress and stays cool all night long while you sleep.
Underneath the columned comfort layer is a 3.5-inch transition layer that helps to further relieve pressure as a transition to the denser base layer. The transition layer is made of 2-lb, plush poly foam. The base layer acts as the foundation and is even higher density. At 4-inches thick this is the section of the Purple mattress that supports your weight and the rest of the bed.
Loom & Leaf constructs their beds out of eco-friendly, breathable materials to keep the bed cooler than other memory foam mattresses. The top layer is a premium comfort foam that has pin-holes to promote breathability and a convoluted bottom designed to enhance airflow. They also have their proprietary spinal cooling gel running through the center of the comfort layer for extra lumbar support. The gel also ensures that no other memory foam bed sleeps cooler.
Underneath this is layers of 5-lb ultra-high-density foam made in the United States from specific providers to ensure the environmental quality standards. The five-pound foam is extremely durable and provides excellent support. When you couple this with their quilted cover, the Loom & leaf reeks of luxurious quality.
Purple prides themselves on making a mattress product that works for all shapes and sizes. For this reason, they only offer the one mattress type when it comes to the Original Purple. Loom & Leaf, on the other hand, gives you the option to choose between two comfort levels; the L&L Firm and L&L Relaxed Firm. This is particularly useful for larger individuals who prefer to sleep on their backs.
Loom & Leaf offers one of the best warranties at this price point. Purple gives a standard 10-year limited guarantee, but L&L goes the extra mile and offers their customers a 15-year warranty.
L&L goes twenty steps further with their sleep trial. They want their customers absolutely certain of their decision, so they offer a 120-day trial.
How They Feel
Purple and Loom & Leaf feel quite different. Purple® Bed has a hard to describe, uniquely bouncy feeling. L&L feels more like a traditional luxury foam bed that cradles your body much more.
The Purple Mattress’ hyper-elastic polymer™ gives it a super-fast response when you push into the bed. It makes it feel even bouncier and floatier than latex beds. That said, once your full weight starts to drive into the mattress, and the Smart Comfort Grid starts to break down in the right places you feel its perfect support.
This supportive, yet highly-responsive floating feeling is what gives Purple such a unique feel. And because you never feel sunk into the mattress, this makes the Original Purple Bed perfect for combo sleepers who change positions frequently throughout their sleep cycle.
Loom & Leaf is very slow to respond to pressure. The slow-responding gel foam and high-density memory foam are what gives it that classic, body molding luxury foam feel. The balance between the gel foam and 5-lb foam helps the sleeper to feel full-body support without any pressure on key points like hips, buttocks, or shoulders.
But unlike the Purple, you feel a little bit sunk into the Loom & Leaf. So it won’t assist your movement as much if you roll around a lot during your sleep. Conversely, you shouldn’t roll around a lot while sleeping on the L&L because you’ll be so darn comfortable.
I wouldn’t say that one is better than the other. But these two covers are fundamentally different.
Loom & Leaf has created a naturally flame-retardant cover by adding thistle to their 100% organic cotton cover. The cover is actually quilted with a light layer of foam to give it that uber-luxurious feel. The cotton is soft, breathable and feels very high-end.
Purple’s stretch knit cover is made from 29% Viscose, 67% Polyester, and 4% Lycra. The cover is super lightweight and soft to the touch. This makes it very breathable and a key factor in enhancing the cooling properties of the Purple Bed.

For Sleepers with Specific Needs
Side Sleepers: Choose Loom & Leaf
Almost every professional mattress review says something along the lines of, “This mattress really shines for side sleepers.” This is especially true given the fact that there are two comfort levels.
Stomach Sleepers: Choose Loom & Leaf
As we pointed out in one of the sections above, the L&L Relaxed Firm mattress is the perfect fit for people who sleep on their stomachs. During the pressure map testing, almost no pressure at all was picked up with averagely sized stomach sleepers.
People with Back Pain: Choose Loom & Leaf
Luxury foam beds like Tempur-Pedic have made a name for themselves in their ability to properly align your spine and combat back pain. L&L is a luxury foam bed offering a comparable product, but for less than half the cost.
Heavy People: Choose Loom & Leaf
Bigger people have the option to step up the bed’s firmness a notch with the L&L Firm comfort level. This makes Loom & Leaf the right choice for heavier people.

The 5-pound super high-density foam creates a fantastic base and gives edge support that is not commonly seen in all-foam beds. So, if your partner is a bed-hog and you find yourself sleeping near the edge, you won’t feel like you’re going to fall off.
The Loom & Leaf Relaxed Firm mattress is a bed that you can count on for comfort. It is backed by a 15-year warranty and is giving those pricey Luxury Foam beds a run for their money. When we add up all of the customer-centric aspects with the comfort and quality of materials, we find that you can’t get a better mattress in this price range.
