It’s backed by Saatva, a company that’s been around for a little while now. They’re expanding into the area of eco-friendly memory foam mattresses but can that little detail unseat Tempur-Pedic? Let’s find out.

Loom & Leaf and Tempur-Pedic Comparison

There are a few similarities between these two companies despite their significant differences, and we’ll start with those.

How are Loom & Leaf and Tempur-Pedic Similar?

There are similarities in both styles and logistics.

Mattress Philosophy

Old, conventional mattresses weren’t comfortable for many people because if you were a side sleeper or experienced back pain, chances are you hit pain points every night. The bed was supportive, sure, but it forced your body into a position that was unnatural for your body to be in. Translation: discomfort.

Early memory foam was all contouring with very little support. Many people felt like they were sinking too far into the mattress, and the mattress was too hot because it reflected body heat back onto the sleeper.

Both companies have used both contouring and supporting foam to give your body the cradling it needs to avoid pain in pressure points, but still keep the support your spine needs. They do this by using two different densities of foam. Top layers are open cell and softer, so they breathe and give where you need. The support layer is denser foam or micro coils to provide pushback against the body.

Motion Transfer

You know how you’re sleeping and you get jostled awake when your partner moves across the bed. With both of these companies, motion transfer is at a minimum through a series of foams that don’t jostle when each part of the mattress is moved.

You also eliminate the dip created in the mattress when one person is heavier than the other. Rolling towards each other in the night might be sweet, but when it’s accidental and prevents you from falling into a comfortable position, it isn’t so fun anymore.

Reduced motion transfer gives you a fresh surface to get comfortable and keeps you from noticing every time your partner shifts or turns over.

Edge Support

Some memory foam mattress collapse on the sides, which makes it difficult for you to use the entire mattress. It can make it difficult especially if you sleep with a partner and mattress real estate is at a premium.

Both companies have considered that old complaint. The mattresses have good edge support so you can use the side of the mattress to get comfortable, and you shouldn’t have trouble sitting on the side.

Temperature Control

Memory foam has a reputation for being hot, but both companies have taken a lot of time to fix the issue. They have open cell foam and breathable layers that help wick heat away from the body. Loom & Leaf also uses gel to aid the cooling process.

Both companies give you the chance to finance a new mattress if you can’t quite swing the entire price all at once. They use outside companies for financing, but you can apply for a decision right from the checkout page and proceed as usual.

Both companies offer white glove delivery. They don’t compress their mattresses but use instead of a traditional delivery company. Your mattress arrives during a delivery window, and the delivery person is available to move your bed into place.

Customer Service and Manufacturing

For many people, it’s essential for them to support companies who manufacture in the United States. Both companies do manufacture here although some of Tempur-Pedic’s materials may come from other places.

They also appear to have customer service representatives located in the United States as well so you shouldn’t have any issues resolving a complaint. They are accommodating and take care of things quickly and thoroughly.

Once you decide on your mattress and decide that it’s right for you after sleeping on it for a few weeks, if anything goes wrong with the mattress in the years after, you’re covered. You have ten years for something to go wrong with the mattress due to defects, and the companies will replace it. They both reserve the right to consider circumstances for wear and tear outside the natural range.

How are Loom & Leaf and Tempur-Pedic Different?

The companies do have some significant differences, particularly in the approach to building mattresses.

Mattress Styles

Here’s what you get with each company.

Loom & Leaf

Loom & Leaf focuses on having one particular type of mattress and doing it well although you do have two firmness options. The top layer is a cooling gel layer meant to offer immediate relief from the heat. It supports your spine and is the first layer of contouring for your body.

The second layer is a five-pound proprietary foam that forms a transition layer between the contouring gel layer and the support layer. It’s open cell, so it’s very breathable. The bottom layer provides structural support for the bed. It’s covered in a cotton material that’s stretchy and doesn’t interfere with the contouring. It also uses a natural fire-resistant thistle.

The soft version is rated at about a six on a ten point firmness scale, and the firm version is about an eight.

Tempur-Pedic Contour

Tempur-Pedic’s first style of mattress is a firm mattress that’s rated at about a seven on the ten point scale. It has four layers of targeted foam that both contours and supports. The first two layers are contouring layers that conform to the curves of the body, while the bottom two are denser supporting foams that give structural support to the mattress.

Tempur-Pedic Cloud

The Cloud is the softer version of Tempur-Pedic’s memory foam mattresses. It’s rated at about a five on a ten point scale. It uses the same layers of foam but a much softer support layer to give it more give.

Tempur-Pedic Flex

The Flex is a hybrid mattress that uses micro coils instead of foam support layers so that it has some bounce. It feels more like a traditional mattress, but it still has the contouring of the memory foam. If you’re wedded to the idea of your innerspring mattress, this one might work better for you.

The Grandbed

The Grandbed is Tempur-Pedic’s most luxurious mattress. It uses two contouring layers and two support layers, but it’s wrapped in a silk-cashmere blend for the most luxurious feeling mattress that’s modeled after five-star hotel mattresses.

The Loom & Leaf and Tempur-Pedic’s full memory foam options are going to have a lot of the traditional memory foam “hug.” If you want the responsiveness of a conventional mattress, you might be disappointed in these.

The Tempur-Pedic Flex will give you that responsiveness you love, however, but it’s going to come at a premium. The micro-coils provide a lot of pushback and edge support, but you don’t sacrifice your contouring.

Eco-Friendly Materials

Loom & Leaf has done a lot to make their mattresses more eco-friendly and better for your health. The mattresses have very little off-gassing and odor. Tempur-Pedic isn’t as clean and has a pretty strong smell right out of the bag. It will need a lot more time to off-gas before the smell dissipates.

Cost is probably the most significant difference between the two companies. You can get a Loom & Leaf California king for about $1500. Tempur-Pedic, on the other hand, is a good deal more expensive. Most of their models are going to set you back over $3000 for a California king.

Trial Period

It’s essential that you be able to sleep on your mattress for a while before deciding. It can take a while for your body to adjust to the new mattress. Tempur-Pedic gives you 90 nights to sleep on your new bed to determine if it’s the right one for you.

Loom & Leaf gives you even more time with 120 nights. Neither company requires a minimum number of nights before initiating a return although you should give any new mattress at least a month before making a decision.

It’s straightforward for you to try out a Tempur-Pedic mattress before you buy it. Tempur-Pedic is located in stores and showrooms all across the United States. You can try out each of their models to figure out what firmness you want or if you’d rather stick with the hybrid option.

Loom & Leaf is much harder to try in showrooms. Instead, you’re going to have to rely on their 120 night trial period to try out a mattress. You do have the option of switching the mattress firmness out, but you’ll have to trust the internet first.

Heavy Sleepers

Unfortunately, neither mattress is going to work very well for heavier sleepers. If you’re on the heavier end of the scale, you’re going to interact with the support layers much more quickly. You aren’t going to be able to take advantage of the contouring layers as well as a mattress made for you.

Other mattresses might fit your needs better, such as the Winkbeds Plus or Ghostbed. These consider your unique needs, so you have the support you need.

Stomach Sleepers: Choose Loom & Leaf

Here’s why. The firm option of Loom & Leaf provides full support for stomach sleepers and has excellent edge support.

Back Pain: Choose Loom & Leaf

Here’s why. The firm choice helps keep your spine aligned and takes pressure off your lower back.

Heavy People: Choose Neither

Here’s why. Neither of these beds is rated for heavier sleepers. They’re likely to be more uncomfortable and have fewer of the contouring benefits than mattress made with your specific needs in mind.

Couples: Choose Loom & Leaf (with one exception)

Here’s why. Loom & Leaf has excellent beds, and we recommend them wholeheartedly for couples. However, if you’re wedded to the idea of having more bounce, and you love the responsiveness of your conventional innerspring mattress, then Tempur-Pedic is going to be a better choice.

Tempur-Pedic makes excellent mattresses and has had a long time to perfect memory foam. We’d like to see those prices come down, however, because there isn’t a justification for how expensive the mattresses are.

Loom & Leaf has done an excellent job of providing a luxury feeling mattress in two different firmness levels without hurting your wallet. There’s not a lot of reason to spend more when you can get the quality and comfort that Loom & Leaf offers. We also love the eco-friendly mindset that gives the mattress less odor.
