Hampton & Rhodes is a subsidiary brand of MattressFirm that is designed to cater to customers who are trying to buy a mattress on extremely tight budgets. Hampton & Rhodes is a line of approximately 30 products that include all types of bedding: memory foam, gel, inner-spring, and hybrid.
MattressFirm, based in Houston, TX, operates entirely within the United States. It has over 3,600 stores spread across the continental United States so that you can find a Hampton & Rhodes mattress virtually anywhere. The company also bought out Sleep Train, a competitor mainly based in the western part of the United States.
MattressFirm is an active charity donor, having launched a campaign to aid foster children. The program is funded by the sale of each mattress, even those not part of the Hampton & Rhodes line.
Hampton & Rhodes is a relatively small line of mattresses, with only about two dozen mattresses currently in the lineup. There aren’t any sub-brands really for this line, there are mostly scattered, single models. The naming scheme is pretty simple for most of them: just “HR” followed by a three-digit number. It doesn’t make it easy to keep track of what improvements or changes have been made over time.
For example, the HR100 has no comfort layer and is a standard inner-spring mattress. The HR 200 keeps the same basic construction but adds a polyfoam support layer. The HR 300 gets rid of the inner spring and goes for an all-foam construction. Keeping track can be hard.
Other models outside the HR line are the Aruba, a pillow-top hybrid; the San Martin, a gel-foam mixture, and the Trinidad, a polyfoam hybrid.
The one we’re going to be looking at is the HR440, a pillow top mattress. It’s Hampton & Rhodes’ most popular model because of the combination of low price and relatively good quality. Mattresses in this line aren’t completely top of the line, but when you’re often paying less than $1,000, you have to imagine that costs get cut somewhere.
The Hampton & Rhodes website, unlike many other mattress websites, does not have a live chat function. This lack can be inconvenient if you prefer dealing with people online in real time. You can email any questions you have, or you can call customer service at (866) 955-9630. Representatives are available to answer your from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central Standard Time every day of the week.
We found out that a lot of customers have had issues with misrepresented products and price discrepancies from ended sales. This puts us on our guard, but the company does attempt to address customer concerns promptly. We found an overall customer satisfaction rate of about 65 percent for Hampton & Rhodes, which is a little low for our taste.
Purchasing a Hampton & Rhodes mattress through the MattressFirm website might be easier because it is easier to navigate and has more detailed product information.
Sleep Trials, Warranties & Return Policy
Hampton & Rhodes mattresses fall under the same return policy as do other MattressFirm products: you get 100 days to try out the mattress in your home, so you can decide whether you like it or not.
If you don’t, you’ll be able to return it for a full refund minus a $149 processing fee. A MattressFirm representative will come pick up your mattress if you bought it online. If you bought it in a store, you will likely have to deal with a different policy. Check your local MattressFirm outlet for details.
The HR440 comes with a 10-year limited warranty, covering the cost of repair or replacement due to damages incurred during the manufacturing process. The company determines which at its sole discretion, based on which option is cheaper and more likely to provide customer satisfaction.
MattressFirm warranties for these models work differently from a lot of other mattress companies: the warranty splits between non-prorated and pro-rate time. The first three years of the warranty are non-prorated, while the following seven years are. The formula takes into account the original price of your mattress, how long you’ve owned it, and the remaining warranty period.
You can file your warranty claim through MattressFirm’s website. Some brands that sell through MattressFirm’s website offer a customer service number you can call. However, the HR440 along with other Hampton & Rhodes products require you to fill out a submission form online. Fill in as much information as possible to expedite your claim and avoid the need for clarification, that way you can get your mattress replaced more quickly.
The return policy dictates that you should try the mattress for at least 30 nights, after which you can exchange or return it. You have up to 100 days under Hampton & Rhodes Happiness Guarantee. After a successful return, it takes about 7 to 10 days for the funds to be credited to your bank account or credit card.
Coupons, Discounts, Sales & Deals
Hampton & Rhodes mattresses in and of themselves are incredibly low-priced, so the company doesn’t usually have coupons. That doesn’t mean there aren’t clearance sales in MattressFirm’s brick and mortar stores. By shopping locally, you may be able to find a few discounts.
Certain third-party sites online like CouponChief, Groupon, or Coupons.com offer special deals from time to time. We saw one deal on CouponChief that lets you save up to 50% when you buy a Hampton & Rhodes mattress protector and another one for 25% off pillows from the same brand.

What Sizes Is It Available In?
The HR440 Pillow Top Mattress from Hampton & Rhodes comes in several different sizes. Here’s a breakdown of the sizes and their dimensions:
- Twin: 39 inches x 75 inches
- Twin XL: 39 inches x 80 inches
- Full: 54 inches x 75 inches
- Queen: 60 inches x 80 inches
- King: 76 inches x 80 inches
- California King: 72 inches x 84 inches
Not all sizes are available for purchase all the time.
What’s It Made Out Of?
The HR440 12.5-inch Pillow Top mattress features a hybrid construction. The bottom layer is made of polyfoam that is intended as a frame and edge support for the entire mattress. The hollowed-out portion contains 650 LFK coils. LFK stands for left-facing knot and it is different than standard springs.
The way each spring is coiled allows it to compress more freely than the more standard Marshall coils. Also, the springs are wrapped in fabric, making it more pliable and providing more flexibility in the way the mattress compresses under the sleeper. The springs are about 4 inches of the total thickness of the mattress.
Above the springs is a layer of 2 inches of support foam that acts as a transition between the bottom and top parts of the mattress. On top of that, you have 2 inches of comfort foam that is slightly softer than the support foam, and Certi-PURE certified by using eco-friendly materials.
A 1.5-inch-thick layer of Visco memory foam acts as lumbar support, which is necessary for back sleepers. Without lumbar support, it’s easy for the back to collapse into a painful and unhealthy position.
Finally, you have the uppermost quilt layers that consist of the patterned cover and the flame-retardant fiber. The cover is easy to remove for cleaning. When you clean the cover, you need to avoid putting it in the washing machine unless it’s on a delicate cycle. Similarly, dry it on delicate.
The whole mattress has a firmness of 6 on a scale of 1 to 10.
Is It Good For…?
No. Side sleepers require a little more softness to allow the body to fit into the mattress. The curvature of the hips and shoulders otherwise are both subject to pressure points and even bending of the spine if improper sleep occurs long-term. By sleeping in the sprinter’s position; that is to say, halfway on your stomach, you can make it easier to sleep on your side on this mattress. You may be able to make it work, but it isn’t the best choice for side sleepers’ needs.
Yes. The medium-level firmness of the mattress is perfect for stomach sleepers because they need to have support in the middle of their body. It’s easy otherwise to collapse into the mattress and end up with an arch in the back This awkward position strains muscles and makes it easier to bruise and compress your internal organs.
Yes. This mattress has just enough firmness to keep the sleeper’s back straight without creating pressure points in the lower back. Back sleepers need firmness and support because the spine naturally has a very slight curvature. If the mattress they sleep on is too soft, it leads to collapse and strain on the spine.
The HR440 includes a layer of lumbar support foam specifically to address back support issues. The lumbar region of the spine is the point at which the back meets the pelvis and is where most people’s back pain resides. It’s where most bending and flexing occurs throughout the day. Firm support allows it to keep still while the body heals during sleep and repairs strained muscle tissue
No. The foam layer can end up hugging the body and trapping heat. We would like it better if there were some active cooling component as exists in other models of the Hampton & Rhodes brand. As it stands, the basic component of this mattress are the inner coils and the cushioning foam layers. This structure allows little room for air to flow through the mattress or under the body. When air is trapped, it heats up because of your body temperature and moisture. It’s even worse in this regard for heavier people, who will sink more into the mattress.
No. As mentioned, heavier people will sink more into this mattress and not likely receive the sleep support they need. We also found that customers complained of the bed developing a pronounced sag over time and losing its cushioning ability. This problem is exacerbated by heavier sleepers. However, given the low price point of the mattress, it’s hard to expect high quality to last.
Yes. In this area, the firmness of the bed works in your favor. Romance requires the bed to have plenty of support and bounce, without which you and your partner will be sinking into the mattress rather than enjoying one another’s company.
The HR440 does have good edge support, which is a must during sex. The foam may lose this aspect over time, but at first, it does a good job at making the bed hold its shape. Without edge support, many sexual positions aren’t feasible.
The downside is noise level. There doesn’t seem to be any cushioning for the springs to dampen their sound during sex.
Where Can I Buy It?
You can buy the HR 400 Pillow Top mattress at almost any of MattressFirm’s 3,600 retail outlets all over the continental United States. Be aware that your local store may not have this mattress in stock and will have to order it for you. If you’re prepared to wait, you can go back to the store at a later date and test it out.
You can also, of course, purchase directly from the website. The disadvantage of making an online purchase is the lack of ability to try out the mattress first before you buy it. This is why MattressFirm provides a 100-day return window, so you can decide whether you want to keep the mattress or not.
How Much Does It Cost?
Prices vary over time, but we were able to track down a rough idea of how the prices for this particular mattress break down by size. This is before any sales or coupons you may come across online. It turns out that the HR440 Pillow Top is quite affordable.
- Twin: $530
- Twin XL: $620
- Full: $610
- Queen: $610
- King: $940
- California King: $940
As you can see, this is a low price for a hybrid mattress. Many of the hybrid mattresses of other manufacturers can cost up to $2000 or even more. For less than $1,000, you can’t do too much better.
If you can’t pay the whole price up front, don’t worry. MattressFirm is partners with Progressive Leasing. By going through the application process, you can qualify for a 90-day payment period. They accept bad credit and no credit, so you don’t have to worry about not being able to pay for your mattress if you buy from this brand. You’ll get a credit decision instantly and then receive a follow-up call to help you continue the purchase process.
Is It Worth It?
Hybrid mattresses tend to cost more than both pure foam and pure inner-spring ones. Many of the Hampton & Rhodes models, including the HR440, have the prices of other brands’ inner-spring models. You might think it’s a huge bargain, and it is, but remember you get what you pay for.
Even though the mattress has good qualities at first, we’ve heard some accounts of them losing the ability to keep you cool, as well as developing depressions over time. You can lessen this risk by periodically rotating the mattress from head to foot, so your weight isn’t in the same spot each time you sleep.
If you can manage to find a closeout sale for the HR440, it is worth the price. Even at standard prices it will serve you well for a few years.
Hampton & Rhodes mattresses can be shipped in one of three ways: standard delivery, white-glove delivery, or red-carpet delivery. White-glove delivery involves the mattress being brought to your home, placed in the room, and set on the foundation. They will also remove the old mattress.
Red-carpet delivery is the same as white-glove, but they come at a time that is convenient for you. Typically, they call you and set up a delivery appointment and aim to arrive within 4 hours of that timeframe. Upon arrival, you should inspect the mattress to ensure no harm has come to it while in transit.
If you want standard shipping, you can expedite it with Next-Day shipping for an additional $79 fee. Otherwise, you can expect arrival at your doorstep in no more than two weeks. Not all shipping options are available for all products. Shipping fees will be calculated at checkout based on the state where you’re having the mattress delivered.
You can have your Hampton & Rhodes mattress delivered anywhere within the continental United States.
Best Bed Frame/Foundation for the Hampton & Rhodes Mattress
Hampton & Rhodes products extend beyond just the mattress. As with any good bedding product line, you can find box springs, pillows, sheets, and mattress covers. The Hampton & Rhodes box springs are made of wood and tempered steel, and they come in two sizes. If you want a higher mattress and lower headboard, choose the 9-inch box spring for the HR440. Use the 5-inch one for a look that’s closer to the ground.
Why Not to Buy a Hampton & Rhodes Mattress
Hampton & Rhodes might be an inexpensive line, but cheapness often comes with a dip in quality. For example, we’ve heard accounts of the mattresses developing a pronounced sag and losing the ability to retain shape.
If you want to ensure you’re getting a product of high quality, be prepared to pay high prices for premium materials.
Compare Similar Brands
Overall, the Hampton & Rhodes line is nothing spectacular on its own. You may want something a little more niche; for instance, if you work out, you might get some benefit from the Bear mattress. It is designed specifically to aid exercise recovery.
You can also try many of MattressFirm’s other products outside the Hampton & Rhodes brand. This brand isn’t as well known, so you might be reluctant to trust it.
We aren’t sure whether the Hampton & Rhodes brand is a good fit unless you’re lucky enough to find one of the mattresses on sale.
The price point is undeniably their strongest selling point. You aren’t going to find mattresses for this low of a cost anywhere else. However, the materials and construction methods used with the brand aren’t that special; nothing makes them stand out from other brands. Over time, the mattresses develop wear and tear more quickly than others seem to do.
Combining the price and the quality, we give the brand a B score.
