DreamCloud And Tempur-Pedic Comparison
These companies are pretty different in a lot of areas, but there are a few things that make them similar. We’ll peel back all the layers to find out both.
How Are DreamCloud And Tempur-Pedic Alike?
First, let’s look at a few things they do that are similar.
One of the things we’ve discovered about sleep is that the body needs two seemingly disparate conditions to get comfortable. It has to have contouring because of different curves and pressure points, but it also has to have support to keep the spine aligned.
Old mattresses had only one layer that forced your body into a straight line, crushing your shoulders and causing your lumbar region to compress. When you woke up, you were probably in a lot of pain.
Both of these companies use different targeted layers. One type contours to your body by giving way where you’re naturally broader, such as your hips and shoulders. It fills in gaps where your torso curves in as well. This decompresses the lumbar region and allows the spine to relax into a more natural position.
The support layers underneath prevent your body from sinking too far into the mattress. It’s possible for a mattress to be too soft and overextend your spine. The support layers push back against the body and align the spine properly as your body sinks through the contour layers.
Edge support is vital if you plan to use the entire mattress to sleep. If you have a partner, you’ll need the same contouring and support even to the edge of the mattress. Without edge support, you’ll end up sliding off the bed or trying to hold on in a weird position as you sleep.
It also makes it difficult to sit on the edge of the bed if you have to perform a magic trick to stay there. Both of these companies have reinforced the sides of their mattresses so that you can comfortably sit with minimal compression.
Does your partner feel like a giant bigfoot creature trying to find a place to sleep in a civilized person’s bed? Motion transfer means you feel every single jiggle as if it’s happening right on top of you.
Many modern beds have motion isolating properties now to reduce the amount of time partners (or pets) spend waking you up. Layers of adaptive materials lessen the connections of the inner materials, so you get a better, more peaceful night’s sleep.
Motion isolation also means that if one partner is heavier than the other, it won’t create a dip towards the heavier partner. You won’t roll together in the middle of the night, and everyone gets the same flat surface to sleep on. Good news for everyone involved.
If you can’t quite swing the entire cost of the mattress, or you’d rather not, both companies have financing options that are pretty painless. You receive a decision within minutes and then checkout from their purchase window as usual.
Tempur-Pedic’s North American branch and DreamCloud are both manufactured in the United States, so you won’t wait forever for a mattress to ship from a factory from overseas. If you purchase a Tempur-Pedic from Amazon, be sure that it’s from a North American branch and not an import. We know it’s important to you to support brands that contribute to the US economy and you accomplish that here.
It’s frustrating to call a customer service line and have them misunderstand you because of language issues. It’s even more frustrating if you can’t understand them. Both of the companies have customer service representatives located in the United States, so you shouldn’t have any trouble. They have reputations for being very helpful. In fact, DreamCloud’s reputation hinges on customer service because of their newcomer status.
Both companies offer white glove delivery. You’ll receive your mattress during a specific time frame, and someone will be there to help you set everything up. You can even choose to have your old mattress hauled away for you.
It might be inconvenient for you to wait around for your mattress to get to your house, but it is nice that the entire process of switching to the new mattress is seamless. You don’t have to worry about conning your friends into helping you move your bed and haul off your old mattress.
How Are DreamCloud And Tempur-Pedic Different?
Some of the significant differences are in the way both companies design their mattresses. Let’s start there first.
DreamCloud uses an innovative eight-layer system to provide contouring, support, and responsiveness. The cover material is a cashmere blend that’s breathable and ultra-soft. It allows airflow close to your skin.
The next two layers are contouring layers. The first is a gel infused layer that improves temperature regulation and contours to the natural curves of your body. The second is a quilted foam layer that softly cradles the broadest points of your body.
The next two layers are denser memory foams that transition your body from the contouring layers to the support layers. They’re thicker and begin to push back against the body. The next layer is individually pocketed coils that provide support and responsiveness. The final layer is another layer of foam that provides motion isolation.
It’s about 14.5 inches, and it’s rated about a six and a half on a ten-point scale.
The Tempur-Pedic Contour is the firm line that uses about four layers of different types of foams, two contouring and two supportive. The foams are open cell and breathable, so they have excellent temperature and air flow. The Contour line is rated at about a seven in a ten-point firmness scale.
The Cloud line is the softer version of the Contour line. It uses the same layers of adaptive foam, but some of the foams are softer. It’s rated at about a five on the ten-point firmness scale.
The Flex is a hybrid mattress that uses foam and individually pocketed coils for more responsiveness and bounce. It feels closer to an innerspring mattress but still features the same contouring foams that the memory foam lines do. If you don’t like the feeling of all memory foam, this one might be a better choice.
Tempur-Pedic’s premium line is the Grandbed. It uses two contouring layers and two support layers wrapped in a silk-cashmere blend. It models a style of mattress found in many five-star hotels that comes from Tempur-Pedic’s vault.
DreamCloud’s materials have very little smell and off-gassing. The materials are a bit eco-friendlier than the Tempur-Pedic whose foams still have a strong odor for a while outside of the box. You may want to allow the mattress to off-gas for a few days before officially sleeping on it if you can.
Tempur-Pedic gives you 90 nights to sleep on the mattress so that you can decide if the bed is the right one for you. It’s crucial that you be able to sleep on a new mattress for a period to allow your body to adjust.
With DreamCloud, you have a full year to try out the mattress before you decide. You have plenty of time for the old pain to work itself out and see if the bed has transformed your sleep. It’s one of the most extended sleep trials in the industry.
Tempur-Pedic offers a ten-year warranty for mattress defects. They’ll replace your mattress at no cost to if defects appear down the road.
DreamCloud replaces your mattress due to defect within the first ten years. They’ll replace or possibly repair your bed due to defects at any time after that ten years. You’re covered for the lifetime of the mattress.
Tempur-Pedic is in many showrooms across the country. If you aren’t sure what you want and would like to test out a few before making a decision, you can find them everywhere. You can also try some out and then purchase online.
DreamCloud doesn’t have a showroom, nor is it in any physical stores. You’ll have to take advantage of the year-long trial period to help you decide if the mattress is the right one for you.
DreamCloud’s (perpetually) sold out twin starts at about $600, and that price goes up to about $1500 for a California king. Tempur-Pedic is significantly more expensive with twins starting at around $2100 for a twin and going up to well over $4000 for a California king. Their Grandbed will set you back around $7000.

For sleepers with specific needs…
A few specific recommendations for certain kinds of sleep needs, because we know not everyone has the same preference!
Side Sleepers: Choose DreamCloud
Here’s why. DreamCloud’s eight adaptive layers gently cradle side sleepers without losing any support. It’s rated at about the right firmness level for side sleepers. Plus, it has excellent edge support, which is good news for side sleepers who use the side of the mattress to find a comfortable position.
Stomach Sleepers: Choose DreamCloud
Here’s why. It’s tough for us to choose a bed with a softer firmness rating purposefully, but we think the coils deep in the DreamCloud provide a lot of support while the surrounding foams ease you into the right position and keep you there.
Back Pain: Choose DreamCloud
Here’s why. DreamCloud’s two layers of support foam just before the coils provide gentle pressure relief and align your spine. The contouring layers fill in curves, so your lumbar region decompresses.
Heavy People: Choose Neither
Here’s why. We can’t recommend a bed that doesn’t account for higher weight. You’ll lose the contouring, and it won’t be as supportive. Turn to Ghostbeds (rated up to 750 pounds) or Winkbeds Plus, a mattress specifically for larger people, instead.
Couples: Choose DreamCloud
Here’s why. The responsive coils are great for couples looking for bounce during sex, but motion isolation keeps you both peaceful during the night.
Tempur-Pedic has some wonderful mattresses, and we love being able to choose from different styles and firmnesses, but seriously, that price. We won’t judge you for spending money on your health, and actively encourage it, but here the extra money doesn’t mean additional value. You can get a fantastic night’s sleep using DreamCloud’s one mattress at a fraction of the price, and never miss Tempur-Pedic’s choices at all.
